Preparing the ground for our new porcelain patio.

The geotextile, compacted sub-base and perimeter soakaway are in place, ready for paving.

First, we spread roughly 50 mm of quarried Type 1 over the existing ground and compact it with a plate compactor. This firms up the ground disturbed during excavation and gives us a sounder surface for the next stage.

We then laid the geotextile membrane and added a further 100 mm of quarried Type 1. We compacted the sub-base with a heavy-duty plate and made a final pass with a lighter plate to bring the levels into line. We also dug a soakaway around the perimeter of the patio area. The groundwork is ready for paving.

Yesterday we protected the property, began digging out and lowered the planned patio levels where the old surface had bridged the damp-proof course. See the previous update.
